Artist Statement
July 2004
Since art school I have taken many courses to expand on my classical
training. I learned to make book cloth, enhanced my sewing skills
and studied embroidery and rug braiding.
Switching from full time art teacher to full time parent has
also influenced my subject matter and choice of materials. While
making a quilt for my son's bed for example, I started hand
and machine sewing paper for the first time. A great deal of
the work I have done in the last ten years combines traditional
handiwork with fine art. I am fascinated by the exchange and
enjoy the crossover of ideas and materials. |

My work has become more abstract but is still
often representational in nature. I try to convey a feeling,
idea or message about a subject. Currently, I work mainly with
paste paper because I love the mediums versatility. I cook my
favorite paste on the kitchen stove and head up to my studio
to add color. I am always discovering new ways to work the surface
which keeps me engaged and excited about the process. I create
books or boxes with the paper I make, and save every single
scrap to sew, weave or collage with.

I continue to teach on a part time basis and love the openness and
responsiveness children have with materials. If I get in an artistic
slump, I know I only have to teach a class to surround myself with
inspiration.
