Born and raised in central Massachusetts, I attended the Massachusetts
College of Art, graduating in 1961 with a BS in Education, prepared
to teach and supervise art to grades 1 - 12. Typical of the times,
I got married instead and settled into family life. After 15 years
I was divorced, and returned with my son and daughter to my home
town, entering Fitchburg State College for a Masters Degree in Creative
Arts in Education. With 2 degrees in my pocket I headed forth to,
at last, teach art. After two years teaching on the junior high
and middle school levels, I found my "place" at Alvirne
High School in Hudson, N.H. I returned to FSC for the certificate
program in Creative Arts
Administration in Education, that was for "business" and
then began to enjoy some of the week long art workshops available
in the summer months.
During my 22 years at Alvirne I worked to create a strong portfolio
preparation program, and an Advanced Placement Studio Art program.
This provided the opportunity for many of my students to successfully
enter art college or university art department and graduate to art
careers. I am so proud of those students. Also, a fine arts requirement
for high school graduation was instituted in New Hampshire and the
art department grew. Together with my two colleagues we built an
art program of which any high school would be proud.
At last, with an empty nest and a frustrated creative urge, I decided
it was
time to reinvent myself to painter.
I have remained active with youth in art education by volunteering
as a panel
judge for the N.H. Scholastic Art Awards program, the Currier Museum
of Art
sponsored N.H. Art All State Festival and am currently teaching
art to my
neighbor's home-schooled children, just so that I won't "lose
my touch". And, of
course, I spend more time with my rapidly growing grandsons. Way
cool.
