Biographical Statement: Judith Ferrara
Judith Ferrara currently writes and paints full time in Worcester,
Massachusetts. She began teaching in 1964 and received her Doctor
of Philosophy in Literacy and Schooling in 1994 from the University
of New Hampshire. She has published numerous books and articles
in the fields of language arts/English, peer mediation, as well
as poetry. Her dissertation, Peer Mediation: Finding a Way to Care,
was published by Stenhouse in 1996.
After a four decade hiatus from practicing art, she happily returned
to painting in 1998 (please see artist's statement). In 2000, she
received the Jacob Knight Award for emerging artist. Her first book
of poems, Gestures of Trees (Mellen Poetry Press, 2000) contains
strong art themes. In 2003, she received a Worcester Cultural Commission/Massachusetts
Cultural Council fellowship in support of her manuscript, Reciprocity:
Selected Paintings and Poems. It is made up of thirty-five pairs
of reciprocally-inspired paintings and poems. She recently co-edited
Poets in the Galleries, a collaborative project of the Worcester
Art Museum and the Worcester County Poetry Association.
