Biographical Statement: Judith Ferrara

Judith Ferrara currently writes and paints full time in Worcester, Massachusetts. She began teaching in 1964 and received her Doctor of Philosophy in Literacy and Schooling in 1994 from the University of New Hampshire. She has published numerous books and articles in the fields of language arts/English, peer mediation, as well as poetry. Her dissertation, Peer Mediation: Finding a Way to Care, was published by Stenhouse in 1996.

After a four decade hiatus from practicing art, she happily returned to painting in 1998 (please see artist's statement). In 2000, she received the Jacob Knight Award for emerging artist. Her first book of poems, Gestures of Trees (Mellen Poetry Press, 2000) contains strong art themes. In 2003, she received a Worcester Cultural Commission/Massachusetts Cultural Council fellowship in support of her manuscript, Reciprocity: Selected Paintings and Poems. It is made up of thirty-five pairs of reciprocally-inspired paintings and poems. She recently co-edited Poets in the Galleries, a collaborative project of the Worcester Art Museum and the Worcester County Poetry Association.
