because morning is unexpected
you are startled by the light
announcing it is time to collect the dead

because you should leave the bedroom
when the mortician arrives
you take this time to rebel

can you decipher these messages
the stretcher wheels
thudding down the stairs
the front door clicking shut
the rolling crunch of ice


snow stops its indifferent rounds
you see tracks, engraved there for days
